STERILIZATION
Sterilization is permanent birth control for women and men. There are two procedures available for women - bilateral tubal ligation and Essure. For men, the procedure is called a vasectomy. Sterilization is a good option for people to consider only if they do not want to have children in the future.
How effective is it?
Bilateral tubal ligation, Essure, and vasectomy are over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
How does sterilization work?
For women: In tubal ligation, the fallopian tubes are cut and tied or burned. This prevents sperm from being able to reach the eggs, so pregnancy cannot occur. Women still have normal cycles.
With Essure, women have micro-inserts inserted through their vagina, cervix, and uterus, and into their fallopian tubes. For three months, these inserts work with a womanıs body to create natural barriers that stop sperm from reaching the egg. After three months, your doctor will perform an Essure Confirmation Test to make sure that the procedure is effective.
Some women prefer Essure because it requires no cutting or burning, and no hormones or general anesthesia is involved. Essure is, however, permanent and irreversible, unlike other methods of sterilization.
For Men: In a vasectomy, the vas deferens are cut and burned. This prevents ejaculation of sperm. Instead, the sperm gets reabsorbed into the body. Men will still ejaculate semen.
What are the advantages of sterilization?
No medicine or devices are required for sterilization, and there are no hormonal side effects. Sterilization is a safe, effective, and permanent birth control. Sterilization is also convenient.
What are the disadvantages of sterilization?
Sterilization is expensive initially, and it wonıt protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Reversing sterilization is unlikely, expensive, and difficult.
How much does sterilization cost?
For women, sterilization can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $6,000. For men, a vasectomy costs $350-$1,000.
